Sergeant-Major Charles Coward (Dirk Bogarde) is a British Army Non-commissioned officer incarcerated in the prisoner of war camp Stalag VIII-B. He encourages his fellow inmates to escape, and tries to humiliate the Nazi Germany guards at every opportunity.
